Are there any mutual funds out there with low monthly minimums....say $25.
I was
looking at setting up something for the kids and was wanting to fund it
entirely off of an existing bank account from the interest only..

Your pickin's are likely to be very slim if at all. Most mutual funds
have low monthly min for IRA or other retirement accounts only.

I think Vanguard is one of the lowest, but they are at $100 minimums.

I'd look no further than SLASX (Selected American). Besides having an
AIP minimum of only $25, it's the kind of fund that would make a great
long-term core holding.

If you look around, you can also find funds out there with $50
minimums for AIP; PAXWX, all the Ariel funds, etc.

I own SLASX myself, in fact. I've done so for years, and I've been very
satisfied with it.

Look at troweprice. They have 50$ minimum if you do automatic monthly

investments on any fund.

After many years, you should have over $10,000 there. Why not convert to
the cheaper SLADX shares (the conversion is a non-taxable event, in case you
hold them in a taxable account - see pp. 39-40 of the prospectus)?

To the question of low minimum funds - not a great family, but Gabelli seems
to allow you to open accounts with $0 if you sign up for their Automatic
Investment Plan. The prospectus
(http://www.gabelli.com/Gab_pdf/prosps/444.pdf), p. 13 says only that there
is no minimum and to call Gabelli for more details.

(Between the two families, IMHO you're much better off with Selected
Shares.)
