Is there any software (preferably cheap and not an online service) that
does portfolio analysis like Morningstar Xray? Do Quicken or Money do this?
I want something which will get my information from Vanguard, Fidelity,
TRP and Scottrade and provide me information about how far I am from my
target asset allocation etc. Returns calculation would be nice but is
not essential.
I keep track of some of these things in excel but it is a PITA to
maintain and I don't want to keep entering all my holdings because so
many things are automatic (e.g. 401 plans, dividend reinvestments etc.
that keeping track is very hard) |

MS Money does portfolio analysis but it is very dependent on what you tell
it. You must be very specific. For example, would you call a money market
fund a mutual fund or cash? Would you call a balaced fund a mutual fund or
'other'? |

I doubt that anything will automatically pick up information from various
accounts. This would be a security issue.

Quicken certainly does. I am sure others would too.

Fidelity will combine all of your accounts into a "full view" portfolio
analysis - the catch is you have to give Fidelity the user name and
passwords for the other accounts .

Can I specify that in Money or does it do it automatically. I would call
Money Market Fund a mutual fund (don't own any except when funds of
funds own them). A Balanced fund is also a mutual fund. |

Wachovia gives me a complete list of holdings from all accounts but does
no analysis. Is fidelity's analysis anything close to the Morningstar X-Ray?

Quicken online will do some of these things, but you do have to own
Quicken. However, I find that a large percentage of my holdings are
classified as "unknown" by Quicken. |

The Fidelity portfolio analysis will analyze just your Fidelity accounts
or Fidelity combined with your other accounts (Full View). It will
give you the classic pie chart showing the percentages in domestic
stocks, foreign stocks, bonds, cash and other. A lot of other info
is also provided - recommend you try it.

Thanks. I just talked to fidelity and they said that they are having
problems with the netbenefits site and full view enrollment is not
working now and will probably be fixed by the end of the week. So I have
to wait until then. |

Yeah, and if you manually set them to what they are supposed to be, when
you download quotes for holdings freakin' Quicken resets them to
"unknown". Really crappy. Schwab has decent portfolio analysis but you
have to manually enter and change outside holdings. And it is really
only good for US based portfolio. I would like to have something that
would work good for a more global portfolio since that seems to be the
definite trend to go for now.

Too bad. BTW Vanguard also has a great portfolio analyzer
but you have to type in all of your "Other Accounts". Vanguard
will automatically update prices and total value but you must
update quantity changes, additions and deletions to your "Other

Does Vanguard also include those while doing portfolio analysis? I got
TRP Account Minder now (since One Stop is closing) which updates
balances and prices automatically but does not include those accounts in
its Morningstar XRay analysis.
If Vanguard does portfolio analysis on outside investments, I will bite
the bullet and enter stuff in manually once a month. |
